Welcome Friends. This page is designed to introduce you to the book “My Journey With the Whirling Dervishes of America” by Lee Guthrie, Photographer.
Currently in the final editing stages, plans are for the book to be available in 2012.
Lee’s journey with the Whirling Dervishes began back in 2002 documenting the Mevlevi Order of America. Jelal Loras, Postneshin of the Order, graciously allowed her access to photograph the group during a retreat on the North Shore of Oahu. That was the beginning of a fascinating journey.
Please browse through some of the photos in the Gallery for a look at the wonderful moments of traveling with the Friends. The photos featured in this venue are not the ones featured in the book. The featured photos on this site are photos that Lee loves from her collection but for various reasons did not make it into the book. However, they have a special place in her heart.
The book, My Journey with the Whirling Dervishes of America, starts with the teacher and takes you through the training, travel, Zikr and Sema. Those of you familiar with the Mevlevi Order will recognize friends, and those that traveled to the venues where she photographed will no doubt see themselves in the pages of this book.
